All about skin cleansers

These days we are overwhelmed with marketing campaigns that promise us the world. Social media make everyone an expert, but we want to set the record straight and share all about skin cleansers. We do a deep dive into cleansers and tell you why we choose a specific cleanser. We trust that you will find crucial information as you read more.

First things first!

Know your skin type! And then know your skin condition!

If you do not know, we can help you.

Some cleaners are better suited for a specific skin type. You choose a cleanser that suits your skin type, lifestyle, and personal preferences.

A good Cleanser

A good cleanser, on its own, is not going to do something miraculous to your skin. But the wrong one can create a skin condition that causes discomfort.
However, the wrong cleanser is the cause of the problem, which you are constantly trying to “fix” with all the products you apply to make your skin feel comfortable.

For example, if your cleanser strips away any trace of oil, it can leave you with dry, irritated, or sensitised skin. If your cleanser is too rich, some balm or oil cleansers can appear to remove makeup well, but in fact, leave a residue behind that clogs your pores.
Many things cause problems with your skin, but to start with the correct cleanser is the way to go.
Start your skincare routine with the correct cleanser to clean your skin and prepare it for the next step.

What types of skin cleansers are there?

Eye makeup remover.

An Eye makeup remover eliminates quickly and gently the most long-lasting makeup, even waterproof products.

We Love Matis Biphase Make-up Remover! It is a 2-in-1 product specially formulated to remove waterproof makeup without leaving the area greasy.

Cleansing oils

Cleansing oils loosen dirt and makeup, irrespective of skin type, especially if you wear much makeup. May product house use this as the first step before you do a second cleanse.

Why do we love Matis Authentik-Oil? Because Matis Authentik-Oil is the only cleanser, you need! No second cleanse necessary.

This fine and lightweight texture oil works for all skin types. It softly removes the face and eyes makeup, including long-lasting formulas, making the skin feel silky and perfectly clean and comfortable.

Use dry hands on dry skin, and when you add water, the oil turns into delicate milk, which takes away all skin residues. Your skin is clean, free from impurities and oil accumulated during the day. The concept behind this product is that oil can break down(dissolves) oil.

Even though it may sound like an oil-based cleanser might not be the best choice for people with oily and combination skin types, it is suitable for all skin types.

If you love the feel of a foam wash? Yes, we know some people love a foamy cleanser. We advise you first to cleanse your face with an oil-based cleanser; if you wear a lot of makeup and then follow it up with another face wash if you want.

Gel cleansers

Foam Cleansers

3in1 cleansers

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, then a gel cleanser is an ideal pick for you. Gel cleansers have a lightweight, transparent, gel-like consistency. The main focus is to clean excess oil and clear out your pores, which unclogs pores to keep acne.

Important to know: to have some oil on your skin does not mean your skin is dirty. You should have some oil to protect your skin and prevent ageing. When you wash away all traces of oil, you will force your skin to generate more oil.

Matis Perfect Clean gives you a light, refreshing face gel that’s non-drying and can use as an everyday cleansing of blemish-prone skin.

Foam Cleansers removes makeup and impurities and lets the skin perfectly clean, soft and clear. However, some foam cleansers could disturb the ph balance on the skin. The ph balance is important because your skin should have a slightly acidic ph to kill bacteria. Bacteria cause pimples.

Important to know: Foam cleansers are not that great at removing makeup. Test yours by after cleaning wipe with toner. If you see any traces of makeup on your cotton wool, wash again or get a different cleanser for when you wear makeup and use the foam when you do not wear makeup or as a second cleanse to give you that clean feeling.

Matis Authentik-Foam is activated with water to create a delicate, refined and light foam. A natural cleansing effect.

1-cleans,

2-removes makeup and 3-exfoliates.

Cleansing water removes all traces of makeup and impurities and optimises cell renewal for a beautiful complexion every day. It leaves skin perfectly clean and has a gentle exfoliating action so that, with every application, skin tone becomes more even. It could be a cost-saver, but exfoliating every day could cause sensitivity, and you have to be careful.

Powder cleansers

Bar soap cleanser:

Cleansing wipes:

They come in the form of powders and turn a bit creamy or foamy when they contact water. You get to control the consistency by controlling the amount of water you mix in. It provides exfoliation properties while you clean. They’re highly concentrated and suitable for removing makeup as well as deep facial cleansing

Body soaps contain many harsh ingredients that can affect the skin. But facial soap bars contain more moisturising ingredients that nourish the skin and balance the pH levels but can cause dehydration, sensitivity, and inflammation.

We never recommend a bar of soap ever, not even for your hands or your body.

Cleansing wipes are great for convenience, but they do not wash away all impurities. They can remove makeup and are easy to carry on and the best for those odd lazy days, but these cannot do so when it comes to cleaning dirt or excess oil. They are OK for removing makeup, but they need a follow-up facewash! Soaking a cleansing wipe with Authentik-water might do the trick.

Main things you need to look at when deciding on the perfect cleanser.

– doesn’t over-dry the skin after cleansing

– balances pH level on the skin

– removes makeup effectively

– washes off unnecessary waste and impurities on the skin

– cleanses and unclogs pores

_ the best face wash is one that can gently cleanse your skin effectively but still doesn’t irritate or damage the skin’s barrier.

-mineral oil/palm oil will clog pores. (This is incredibly harmful because it interferes with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, increasing the likelihood of acne and other disorders.)

-Alkohol there are good and bad alcohols.

(Bad alcohols are methanol, isopropyl alcohol, propanol, benzyl alcohol, and sd alcohol (alcohol denat.), to name a few. They are extremely drying and irritating to the skin and may even cause inflammation because they strip the skin of its natural protection. Although alcohols may feel good because they are light and make your skin not feel greasy, it damages the skin barrier, it leads to an increase of acne-causing bacteria and makes inflammation worse.

-Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are known to cause skin irritation and trigger different allergies.

-DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine). Usually found in products that foam like facial cleansers and soaps. They can be in eye makeup, fragrances, hair products, and sunscreens

How do I choose between the different types of cleansers?

Your skin type and condition is more important than what you like you want. It’s like eating your veggies. Although it does not always taste good, you know you need it.

Use a cleanser that clears away impurities without stripping off skin’s natural oil & moisture.

We can easily get tricked into feeling fresh after using a cleanser that makes your skin feel squeaky clean & tight. But it is a trick! You are causing harm.

How do you know what skin type you have?

Here are some pointers, but it is only pointers. Over 25 years of experience taught me that many people do not know their skin type or skin condition. I urge you to go for a proper skin analysis.

A little information about skin types

Combination Skin

Sensitive skin

Your skin gets both dry and oily in certain areas. Mostly you will notice more oil on your T zone and chin area and dry patches on cheeks.

(Combination skin types may be the most challenging when choosing a cleanser because you have both oily and dry areas of skin. You can use a gel or foam type cleanser, but it is vital to find a product that effectively removes excess sebum without leaving the face dry or oily. The ideal cleanser should clean the pores and moisturise. You can also try to exfoliate in areas where there are more dead skin cells clogged.

Your skin is irritated easily, and your skin will react quickly, especially to certain ingredients. It might go red or burn easily.

When it comes to cleansing your sensitive skin types, it’s essential to carefully consider ingredients because they can trigger your sensitivity and make it worse. Try to find a product with mild concentrations. Try to find gentle natural ingredients that balance pH level effective cleanser without stripping oil but removing impurities.

Acne Skin

Dry Skin

Oily Skin

Big sore pimples, red and inflamed and can feel sensitive.
Glycolic acid is oil-soluble that can penetrate deep into the epidermis to dissolve the mixture of dead skin cells and sebum that clogs pores.
Another option for those with acne-prone skin is a cleansing oil. Stay away from cleansers with detergents, alcohols, and salts which can dry and irritate the skin.

Your skin feels tight & general dryness, flaky patches and a tight feeling.

You have large visible pores, and your skin quickly gets oily even after cleansing your skin.

How often should you wash your skin?

Twice a day, every morning and night.

Morning: To get rid of the skin excretions during the night

Evenings: To remove all the makeup, pollution, dust, oil, impurities, and sweat accumulated daily

If we don’t do this, it can cause more blackheads.

You are cleaning your face properly before bed to get your skin ready for nighttime products. Follow your face wash with a good moisturiser. At night use active ingredients to treat and regenerate the skin. While sleeping, products can work uninterrupted by sun, wind, makeup application, or other disturbances as we move through our busy day. Your body can restore and absorb many functions during sleep.

What not to do regarding skin care?

  1. You do not need to wash your face more than twice a day.

Some clients feel their skin feels dirty all the time. Ideally, we need to wash twice a day, but you need to clean your skin after gardening, gym session or a beach day. Those days where you can feel the dirt on your skin, if it’s early evening, wash your face and apply your nighttime routine. If you are going to the gym early morning, use your toner as a cleanser and then wash your face after your gym session with a cleanser. Most clients can swap their morning cleanser with a toner because it is unnecessary to do a deep cleansing after sleep.

  1. Never sleep with Eye makeup. There are many glands around the eyelids and eyelashes. Wearing makeup overnight can clog and inflame the delicate glands and skin around the eyes. The result? Irritated, red, and sometimes puffy eyes. Best to remove all traces of eye makeup before bed every night.

In this age of information overload, it is easy to see yourself having all the knowledge to make a silly decision regarding a cleanser. You will find many contradictions regarding skincare. One is that you don’t need a cleanser, and you can wash your skin with your soap in the shower. This is true. But experience told us differently. We have seen results. It is incredible what a difference there is in just changing a cleanser.
